The Club
Why should I join an investment club?
Through the club, you learn how to evaluate all types of different investments. Separate side businesses have come out of these things. I know I want to own a minor league baseball team one day. All of this while making some money for yourself. Some investment clubs go on to form an LLC, so that they actually distribute dividends to their members. This strategy will increase the net worth of the club as well as your own net worth and broadening your own stock portfolio. Right now we have only invested in an index fund, the Dow 30: DIA. I will push us to stay with investing in more risky index funds while we learn the system.
How much does it cost?
The cost is $100 to join and $50 every month. All money goes to investing and trade fees, as well as any business fees, since we are officially a registered business. I would venture to say that 90-95% of the money goes to investing, with the remainder going to overhead.
What is the structure?
We have officers and committees. Our committees research different financial sectors (Energy, International, etc.). You can download our Bylaws/Partnership Agreement.
Who’s in the club?
The club membership consists of mostly first time or inexperienced investors. We are basically learning from each other how to “play the game”. We encourage each member to have their own investing accounts, I’m with sharebuilder. It will be difficult to get rich off of $50 a month, but through your work with the club you will learn how to make your own financial moves with bigger money. This is good especially if you cannot convince the club to see something your way. ”Screw you guys, Fried Chicken Futures is a winner and I’m gonna prove it.”
Can I join if I don’t live in Houston?
We have made it a policy that anyone can join from anywhere in the world. We encourage everyone to physically show up for meetings, but we have a conference call set up for everyone that lives outside of Houston or is traveling.
Meetings
When are the meetings?
Meetings are the 1st Sat of every month @ 10:30 AM. We keep the meetings to about 1.5 hours.
What happens at the meetings?
The club debates our options and votes to make a certain investment, which the advisor will put in for us the coming Monday. The cost is $100 to join and $50 every month. All money goes to investing and trade fees, as well as any business fees, since we are officially a registered business.
Our Money
How do you decide on your stocks?
We have a financial advisor, Marlon Scott, who works at Banc of America Investments. Each week, he usually does a little presentation on some aspect of the stock market, with our blasting him with questions. This helps us learn more about the market, how and why it moves, and how we can make money out of it.
